Animal Welfare

Marshall BioResources is dedicated to maintaining high standards of animal welfare. We greatly respect and appreciate the role our animals continue to play in the development of life saving discoveries, medicines and treatments for humans and animals alike. Therefore, we believe our animals deserve the best possible treatment and care we can provide.

Our US facilities are fully compliant with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal Welfare Act and its associated regulations. We are also compliant with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), Public Health Service (PHS) Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. This policy addresses not only the humane use of animals, but the entire institutional program of animal care and use. The policy applies to any facility that receives federal grant funding, or is involved with federally funded research. While Marshall BioResources does not perform federally funded research ourselves, we maintain an Animal Welfare Assurance on file with OLAW, and our animal care program meets or exceeds the expectations outlined in the policy.

Our UK breeding facility is a designated establishment under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 Amendment Regulations 2012 which is compliant with Directive 2010/63/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 22 September 2010 on the Protection of Animals Used for Scientific Purposes (Directive 2010/63/EU).

In addition, our commitment to animal welfare is further exemplified by the fact that our US facilities remain fully accredited by AAALAC International. We have also established our own, fully compliant Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and we regularly review our Animal Care and Use Program to ensure we are serving our animals in the best possible ways.
