Experts spoke on Capitol Hill about the ways in which research with dogs has led to medical advances for both people and animals affected by serious illnesses. These presentations were for the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) briefing on canine research. One presenter described similarities between canine and human cancer, and how researching canine cancers influences the development of new therapies to treat human cancers. Dogs also suffer from other disorders that affect humans as well, such as hemophilia, and dogs can also develop an immune response to their treatment like humans. Therefore, dogs have also contributed to identifying new possible treatment approaches using gene therapy. FASEB also released a new canine research factsheet detailing the ways in which research with dogs has contributed to human and animal health.
